Tuned in Monday

Hello Thunderbird Family,

I hope everyone has had a fantastic couple of weeks and missed me! I am officially back from an incredible Membership Growth Conference at Philmont Scout Ranch, and I came home with a notebook full of new ideas, strategies, and excitement for the future of Thunderbird District.

Now it’s time to put those ideas into action!

We absolutely crushed our Friends of Scouting Campaign, and now we’re shifting our focus to our next big goal… MEMBERSHIP GROWTH! Let’s show everyone that Thunderbird isn’t just great at raising funds, we’re also the district that grows Scouting in Central Texas!

Membership Growth — Our Next Big Goal

Now that Friends of Scouting is wrapping up, it’s time to focus on the next challenge…

Growing Scouting!

Currently, we’re sitting at 76.3% of our annual membership goal, and I know that number is only going to keep climbing.

We’ll soon be ramping up:

✅ Join Scout Nights
✅ School recruiting
✅ Community outreach events
✅ Fall recruiting preparation

Our Membership Team is going to play a huge role in helping us get there, and we’d love to have more volunteers join us.

If you’ve ever wanted to help grow Scouting but weren’t sure where to start, this is your opportunity.

Whether you can help at one event or throughout the recruiting season, we’d love to have you on the Membership Team.

Friends of Scouting Momentum — The Winners Circle!

What an incredible campaign!

Thunderbird continues proving that we are absolutely small but mighty!

We have officially reached our Friends of Scouting goal and are now working to exceed it! Our next milestone is finishing 15% OVER GOAL, and with just a few more gifts, I know we can get there.

Your donation could literally be the gift that pushes Thunderbird to another record-setting year.

Be part of the winning team! 🏆

💡 Remember, you do not have to make your full gift today. You can pledge now and pay later in the year. We can even set up payment schedules that work best for you.

If you’d like to make a pledge or have questions about giving options, simply give me a call, send me a text, or shoot me an email, and I’ll be happy to get everything set up.

💡 Many employers also offer matching gift programs, which can double the impact of your donation!

Thank you to every volunteer, presenter, donor, business, and family who helped make this campaign such a success. Every dollar directly supports the youth and units of Thunderbird District.

 Important SYT Reminder

Current Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) status is required for registered adults to participate in many Scouting activities and helps ensure we continue providing a safe environment for all youth and volunteers.

The training system has been updated.

The system will automatically assign the appropriate course based on your training history:

✅ Never completed the new 90-minute course? You’ll be assigned the full course.

✅ Previously completed the 90-minute course and it expired more than six days ago? You’ll retake the full course.

✅ Course still active or expired within the last six days? You’ll receive the refresher.

To complete your training:

👉 Log into My.Scouting.org
👉 Open My Training
👉 Select Take Course or Retake Course

If you completed the refresher without first completing the full 90-minute course, you will still need to complete the full course.

Please complete this as soon as possible so there are no interruptions to your participation in upcoming Scouting activities.

Help Wanted — Merit Badge Team & District Volunteers

We’re continuing to grow our district volunteer team!

We’re especially looking for adults interested in:

• Teaching Merit Badge Classes at Roundtable
• Unit Commissioners
• Roundtable Commissioner
• District Committee Members
• Additional Pack representation on district committees

Teaching even one Merit Badge class each year can have a tremendous impact on our Scouts.

If you’re interested in serving, we’d love to hear from you.

We’re one of the first districts in the council using this system, and it’s going to help us communicate faster than ever.

I couldn’t be more excited about where Thunderbird District is headed. We have incredible momentum, amazing volunteers, and big goals still ahead of us.

Let’s finish Friends of Scouting strong, continue growing our membership, and make the second half of the year even better than the first.

As always, thank you for everything you do for the youth and families of Thunderbird District.

Yours in Scouting,

Sherrick West | Thunderbird District Executive

Pinewood Derby at the Mall

Our council is working to secure space at Barton Creek Square and Lakeline Malls on Saturday, August 8, to promote upcoming Join Scouting Night events and our Speedfest celebration. Our plan will be to set up two Pinewood Derby tracks at each mall so that families walking by can try racing a Pinewood Derby car and learn about Scouting. While we are still nailing down the details here, we would love to hear from packs willing to provide and staff a track as well as troops, crews, and ships who can help pass out information and answer families’ questions. If you/your unit is interested in helping, please contact charles.mead@scouting.org

Tuned In Monday

Hello Thunderbird Family,

First off, a HUGE thank you to everyone who came out and helped clean out the district storage unit! What we accomplished was incredible.

Because of all your hard work, we made so much progress that we no longer need to schedule a second storage clean-out day!🎉

Your willingness to give up part of your weekend saved the district both time and money and will make planning future events significantly easier. Thank you for continuing to demonstrate what makes Thunderbird such a special district.

I also wanted to give everyone a quick heads-up that I will be traveling to Philmont Scout Ranch later this week and will be out of the Austin area until June 24th. If you experience an emergency during that time, please contact the Capital Area Council Fickett Center and they will make sure the appropriate staff member assists you.

Friends of Scouting Momentum — The Final Push!

Thunderbird continues proving that we are absolutely small but mighty!

We are so close to reaching our Friends of Scouting goal that I can practically taste it. With just a few more gifts, we will be over goal and celebrating another successful campaign.

Your donation could literally be the gift that puts Thunderbird over the top.

Make sure you’re part of the winning team! 🏆

👉 Donate Here:

💡 Remember, you do not have to pay your entire gift today. If it works better for your family, you can pledge now and pay later in the year. We can also discuss payment schedules that fit your needs.

If you would like to set up a pledge or have questions about giving options, simply give me a call, text or send me an email and I will be happy to help get everything set up.

💡 Many companies also offer matching gift programs that can double your impact.

Thank you to everyone who has already donated, pledged, presented, or helped move this campaign forward. Every dollar directly supports the Scouts and units right here in our community.

 Important SYT Update

Last week I mentioned that completion of the new Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) would be required to continue receiving my weekly district emails.

Due to some technical issues with the training platform, I am extending that deadline until next week.

However, with summer camp, camporees, recruiting events, and other Scouting activities either underway or rapidly approaching, it is extremely important that this training be completed as soon as possible.

Current SYT status is required for registered adults to participate in many Scouting activities and helps ensure we continue providing a safe environment for all youth and volunteers.

Training Logic Has Been Corrected

The system will now automatically direct you to the correct course based on your training history:

✅ If you completed the old Youth Protection Training but have never taken the new 90-minute course, you will be assigned the full 90-minute course.

✅ If you previously completed the 90-minute course and it expired more than 6 days ago, you will need to retake the full course.

✅ If your 90-minute course expired within the last 6 days, or is still active, you will be assigned the refresher course.

To access your training:

👉 Log in to My.Scouting.org
👉 Click “My Training”
👉 Select “Take Course” or “Retake Course”

⚠️ Important: If you completed the refresher course without ever taking the full 90-minute course, you must still complete the full course. If you experience issues, clear your browser cache and try again.

Please make this a priority so there are no interruptions to your participation in upcoming Scouting activities.

Help Wanted — Merit Badge Team & District Volunteers

We’re still looking to expand our Merit Badge Class Team and take full advantage of the classroom space available at Bethany Lutheran.

If there is a merit badge you would be willing to teach in the future, please let us know. Even teaching one class a year can make a huge difference for our Scouts.

We are also continuing to look for:

• Unit Commissioners
• Roundtable Commissioner
• Committee Members across all district committees
• Additional Pack representation on district committees

If you’re interested in helping at the district level, please reach out to:

📧 commissioner.tbird@gmail.com
📧 districtchair.tbird@gmail.com
📧 Sherrick.West@scouting.org

The district continues to grow, and we need strong volunteers to help us keep that momentum moving forward.

We are currently one of the only districts utilizing this system, so let’s show how valuable fast communication can be for our Scouting families.

Thank you all for everything you continue to do for the youth of Thunderbird District. Whether you’re serving at camp, helping with recruiting, supporting Friends of Scouting, or simply showing up for your unit every week, you are making a difference.

Have a fantastic week, stay cool, and I’ll see everyone when I return from Philmont!

Yours in Scouting,

Sherrick West

Tuned in Email Roundtable, OA, Summer Camp & Ice Cream

 Important SYT Reminder

One important reminder before we jump into this week’s updates:

Beginning after this week’s email, anyone who has not completed the new Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) may no longer receive my weekly district emails.

I pull my distribution list directly from our current roster of adults who are compliant with Scouting America’s training requirements. If your SYT is not completed and reflected in the system, you may be removed from future communications and miss important district updates, event information, deadlines, and announcements.

📅 SYT Deadline: May 31, 2026

If you have not completed the new training yet, please make it a priority as soon as possible. Not only is it required to remain a registered leader, but it is also how I ensure district communications are reaching active and compliant volunteers.

Let’s get this knocked out and keep everyone informed and connected!

Hello Thunderbird Family,

We have a pretty busy week ahead of us! Many of our Scouts and leaders are already enjoying summer camp adventures, and before we know it, Thursday will be here with another Roundtable.

First, thank you to everyone who has continued supporting Scouting throughout the summer months. While things may slow down for some units, there is still a lot happening across Thunderbird District, and we’re excited about what’s ahead.

 Upcoming Events

🧹 June 6 — District Storage Clean Out Day
🧹 June 20 — District Storage Clean Out Day
🏕️ July 15 — Camping Committee Meeting

Roundtable This Thursday — Let’s Make It Fun!

📅 Thursday, June 4
🕖 7:00 PM
📍 Bethany Lutheran Church

We heard you loud and clear!

One of the biggest pieces of feedback we’ve received is that you want Roundtable to be more engaging, interactive, and useful. We’re committed to making that happen.

This month we’ll be featuring:

✅ Breakout discussions focused on recruiting and crossover opportunities for both Packs and Troops

✅ Review and discussion of key information coming out of the National Annual Meeting (NAM)

✅ Open discussion and idea sharing between units

We want Roundtable to become a place where leaders leave with ideas they can immediately take back and use in their units.

 OA Chapter Meeting Reminder

A huge reminder that our Order of the Arrow Chapter Meeting will be taking place at the SAME TIME and SAME LOCATION as Roundtable this Thursday.

If you are an OA Representative or Officer please make every effort to attend.

Strong OA participation helps strengthen both our chapter and our district.

 Ice Cream & Popsicle Exchange

Since we will NOT have a Roundtable in July, we want to have a little fun before everyone disappears for summer camps and vacations.

So we’re hosting a:

🍦 Ice Cream & Popsicle Exchange 🍧

Bring your favorite ice cream, popsicles, frozen treats, or toppings to share with fellow Scouters.

Let’s beat the Texas heat and enjoy some fellowship together!

 Future Roundtable Locations?

One idea that received a lot of positive feedback recently was hosting one or two Roundtables each year at a different location, preferably somewhere with food options available.

If you know of a great restaurant, community space, or gathering location that could host a Roundtable, please let District Commissioner Bill Orner and myself know.

We would love to get something on the books and continue making Roundtable a place people genuinely look forward to attending.

No Merit Badge Class This Month

Due to summer camp schedules, vacations, and several of our regular instructors being unavailable, there will NOT be a Merit Badge Class offered during June’s Roundtable.

The good news is that we’re actively working to expand our Merit Badge team and take better advantage of the classroom space available at Bethany Lutheran.

If you are a registered Merit Badge Counselor and would be willing to teach a future class, even just once or twice a year, please let us know! We have a great space available and would love to offer more opportunities for Scouts to earn badges while attending district events.

We plan to resume Merit Badge Classes in the coming months and are always looking for counselors willing to share their knowledge and experience with our Scouts.

• Pack representation on district committees
