Troop 61 was looking at ease in their snazzy Class B shirts as they fried up beignets generously coated in powdered sugar for delighted, prospective Scouts. They cheerfully swap stories from their high adventure at Nothern Tier. One Scout describes the walleye he caught, and another Scout exclaims how he lost a lure when a giant pike snapped his line.

Troop 82

Troop 82 meets Monday nights from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at the Shady Hollow Community Center (3303 Doe Run, 78748)

Propsective scouts were able to improve their fishing casting with the guidance of the Scouts of Troop 82. Scouts and leaders alike shared a chill demeanor. The leaders emphasized, “We have a strong youth-led philopsphy with opportunities to make their own path.”

Troop 395

Troop 395 helped propsective Scouts brush up on their First Aid Skills. Their Scouts warmly greeted prospective Scouts and invited them to practice First Aid with them.

The Scouts are friendly and open. Opportunities for advancement are a key focus. They focus on a New Scout Campout each year and troop meetings are advancement-focused. They describe their approach as, “self-paced and troop-encouraged.” At campouts adults must remain in “adultlandia” because the scouts insist on having space of their own to problem solve and succeed together.

The Scouts shared their favorite memories of Summer Camp at Bear Creek. “My first zip line,” beamed one Scout. “The Waffles,” quickly added another Scout holding out his hands to show the large size of the waffles, “maybe it was all the walking, but the waffles were amazing.”

Troop 448

Trrop 448 meets at St Catherine of Siena Catholic Church (4800 Covict Hill Road, Austin 78749).

The Scouts of 448 built a catapult using sticks and lashings. Prospective Scouts were able to help launch a ball.

Troop 448 emphasizes that they build leaders in their troop – the troop is boy-led and guided by adults in the Patrol Leader’s Council (PLC). A Scout identifies that his troop is particularly good at rank advancement, campouts, and building friendships. Recently they went on a canoeing campout where the Scouts ensured everyone knew how to use a dry bag, knew how to properly lash a backpack to a canoe, and knew were prepared for the trip.

Troop 505

Troop 505 meets Mondays from 7-8:30 pm at Oak Hill United Methodist Church (7815 Hwy. 290 W.)

Troop 505 brought all the supplies necessary to help propsective Scouts create the troop’s signature “woofam sticks.” Prospective Scouts first sanded and shaped a wood cylinder on a stick. The troop then helped branded the cylinder with the 505 logo. Then Scouts from 505 taught participants how to shape dough around the stick, cook it over a fire, and then fill the cooked dough with pie toppings, puddings, and whipped cream.

A Scout who has been in Troop 505 for one year reports his troop is great because, “of all the sugar we get to have and it’s really fun and optional campouts once a month and you will be flying through advancements.”

Troop 555

Troop 555 “The Triple Nickel” gather on Mondays at 7:00pm at Abiding Love Lutheran Church (7210 Brush Country Rd, Austin).

Troop 555 helped propsective Scouts practice their fire building skills.

Scouts emphasized that they are boy-led, that Scouts lead rank advancement, and they have monthly campouts. One Scout proudly explained how much he has done to prepare an excellent program for the, “Into the Woods,” troop meeting for AOL to earn their adventure pin.

Troop 3377

Troop 3377 was the only troop present providing materials both in English and Spanish. They meet on Sundays @ 3:00pm at VFW Post 3377 (12921 Lowden Lane, Manchaca 78652)

Troop 337 is an upbeat troop with great humor. They set up a rock hanging from a tripod which can “tell the weather.” The Scouts explained to prospective Scouts how this rock tells the weather and the different types and purpose of the knots used in the endevor.
