Dr. Ostlund has spend over 30 years in education; with 15 years of experience in middle schools. She is talented in fostering positive collaborative lab environments to maximize peer-to-peer led learning. She continues teaching and developing curriculum for pre-service teachers in UT’s Hands on Science Program for the College of Education.

Paddle Craft Safety Modules – River Kayaking and Basic Kayaking

BSA Paddle Craft Safety expands Safety Afloat training to include the skills, as well as the
knowledge, required for a unit leader to assess whether or not they are qualified to supervise a kayaking activity. Persons completing the training will have the opportunity to learn the skills to safely launch, and maneuver a kayak along with planning and rescue techniques.
There are 2 modules of training for kayaking: 1) Basic and 2) River (moving water). The
training modules are open to any registered adult leader, Scout, Varsity, or Venturer, who is
age 15 or older. The Basic Module Paddle Craft Safety is a prerequisite to the River (moving water) Module.

Swimming and Water Rescue
September 21, 2019 Lost Pines Scout Reservation, Bastrop
The Capitol Area Council Aquatics Committee is offering a course in Swimming and Water
This course provides leaders with information and in-the-water skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to swimming emergencies during unit swimming activities. It also expands awareness instruction provided by Safe Swim Defense training to include basic water rescue skills.
Successful completion of the Swimming and Water Rescue training will authorize students to conduct the standard BSA swim classification tests.

Shooting Sports Training

MUST BE 21 YEARS OR OLDER (See below for limited exception)
Description: This 25 hour course completes all requirements to become an NRA Rifle Instructor. The training includes both classroom and range time.  Students will complete a basic instructor training, basics of rifle shooting and rifle instructor training. Students must complete all sections to become certified.
NOTE: This course is not for Cub Scout leaders who want to be certified as Cub BB gun range masters.  Also, if you have already taken the basic instructor training (BIT), after registering, inform Mr. Agnell and he will give you specific times to arrive so that you do not repeat BIT.
Limited Exception: Scouts under 21 who plan to work at winter or summer camp on the shooting range may attend and be certified as assistant or apprentice instructors, only with the prior approval of Mr. Agnell.
Dates: Oct, 4-5 & Oct. 11-12
Times: Friday Oct. 4 will be from 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm at Brentwood Christian School, 11908 N Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78753.  The class on Saturday, Oct. 5 will start at 8:30 AM and may end as late as 8:00 pm.
Friday Oct.11 will be  6:30 pm -10:00 pm. at Wooten Lodge, LPSR and continue on Oct. 12 from 8:30 am – 7:00 pm at the lodge and on the rifle range.
Meals: Meals will be provided on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Lost Pines.
Camping: Camping is available for those who wish to camp over the weekend.
Class Size: This course is open to the first 20 who register and pay the $80 course fee.
Course requirements to be certified as an NRA Rifle Instructor:
1. Be a registered Scouter age 21 or over;
2. Attend the entire course;
3. Pass a written test and demonstrate shooting ability;
4. Each participant must commit to helping at least once each year with a Council, District, Troop or Venture shooting sports activity, not including their own unit.
There will be a $30 – $50 NRA certification fee at the end of the course, depending on whether you are an NRA member or not.

NRA Range Safety Officer Training – (Boy Scout & Venture Leaders Only)
Age Requirement: You must be 21 years or older to take this course.
DATE: October 19, 2019
Activity Time: 8:30 am – 6:30 pm
Description:  If you want to take your troop or crew shooting, you must have an NRA Range Safety Officer present at the range, in addition to an NRA Instructor. This 9 hour course consists of Range Safety Officer’s roles and responsibilities, range standard operating procedures, range inspection and range rules, firearm stoppages and malfunctions, and Range Safety Briefings which include emergency procedures. You must be 21 years old to take this course.  In addition to the course fee of $60.00, upon completion of the course, you will need to register with the NRA to become certified.  There will be a $30 – $50 NRA fee depending on whether you are a NRA member or not.
Location:  Fickett Center
Don’t Forget: The course is open to the first 20 who register.
What’s Included: The cost for the course will be $60.00 which includes the RSO manual and lunch.

IOLS Training

To: Scoutmasters, Scout Leaders, and Unit Committee Members

We invite you to participate in Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills, a fun-filled program of hands-on skills training in the outdoors, designed to help you master basic camp skills required for Tenderfoot to First Class.

Event Details

Location: VFW Post 4443

Date: September 14-15. 2019

Time: Program runs from 8:00 AM Saturday and ends @ Noon Sunday.

COST: $35 – Covers food and learning materials.


Instructors will help you learn how to set up camp, cook, and work with woods tools, and about ropes, planning campfire programs, map reading and compass skills, hiking and packing techniques, nature identification, and outdoor ethics. Each outdoor session will bring to life the pages of the Scouts BSA handbooks to help you deliver the promise of Scouting to yourself and the youth you serve. It will increase your comfort level and give you confidence as a trained, skilled leader. The program will also give you the opportunity to work with other Scout leaders from your area, meet new friends, and reinforce skill techniques with fellow unit leaders.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation is the Cub Scout Leader training required for an Cub Scout den or pack outdoor event, including pack camping, overnighters and Webelos den overnighters.

It is comprised of two components – an online component and a practical hand-on component. Both components must be completed to qualify as a “trained” Cub Scout outdoor leader.

For the online component, log into and click on the Learn Center.  BALOO is at the bottom under “Expanded Learning”.

BALOO Trained Leaders will be able to:

  • Explain the focus of the cub Scout camping program
  • Demonstrate the skills necessary to plan and carry out a successful camping activity
  • Describe the resources available ot carry out this activity
  • Discuss the requirements for a successful activity.
