TEXAS POWDER HORN 2010
Hands On High Adventure Training for Cub Scouts, Troop and Crew Leaders
September 10-12 and September 24-26, 2010 at Camp Tahuaya
Updates:
· We are pleased to announce that Charlie Thorpe will be presenting Leave-No-Trace (LNT) and Backpacking at Texas Powder Horn 2010. Charlie has spread the LNT message to tens of thousands around the world. He is a legendary through-hiker who has completed thousands of miles on the big treks like the Appalachian Trail (all of it), and the Pacific Crest Trail (yes, all of it), and more. Charlie lives the "Seven Principles of LNT" on every trail and at every event. He is a passionate supporter of scouting, worldwide. Last year Charlie took the LNT message to world scouting's 100 year celebration in England where tens of thousands participated. This is a rare opportunity to learn the science and practice of LNT and through-hiking from Charlie Thorpe.
· Venturing Crew 1872 is coming to Texas Powder Horn. Crew 1872 reenacts Civil & Indian Wars under the leadership of Captain Bryan R. Glass. This premier Scout Living History unit will train course participants on Civil War replica revolvers, pistols, and carbines used in the Longhorn Council's Living History and High Adventure. Then, just as you gain a true appreciation for black powder, they call in the artillery. Crew 1872’s nationally certified trainers for muzzle-loading artillery will drill participants as crews to maintain and fire Model 1841 Mountain Howitzers and a working gatling gun. It’s called Venturing… so take the time to experience the true awe of Outdoor Living History.
Powder Horn gives participants hands on exposure to many outdoor/high adventure activities. The two-weekend Training is designed to expose Venturing and Boy Scout leaders to a wide range of high adventure activities and resources necessary to operate a successful Troop or Crew High Adventure program. Scouting leaders often face the dilemma of having a strong desire to provide challenging and fun outdoor adventure programs to meet the needs of their older youth members, while lacking the knowledge and/or resources to do so. Powder Horn responds to this quandary with an exciting new training opportunity that exposes Boy Scout and Venturing adult leaders to a wide range of outdoor/high adventure activities. We provide participants with valuable resources and contacts to assist them in delivering the promise of Scouting high adventure to youth. During Powder Horn, presentations on high adventure Ranger topics are made by expert consultants who demonstrate the skills required and explain where resources, such as equipment, facilities, guides, instructors, and certifications can be obtained locally. Most presentations involve actual hands-on experience by the participants - you’ll get to sample many of the activities yourself so you will know how much fun your crew or troop will be able to have. We recruit an all-star staff of high adventure experts, outdoor vendors, and Scouters from all over Texas to guide you through the adventure! For example: the kayaking resource session will be taught on the lake by an Olympic kayaker. Capitol Area and Longhorn Councils are proud to co-host the 2010 Powder Horn training course, based at Longhorn Council’s beautiful Camp Tahuaya, located near Belton, Texas. High Adventure Topics: Powder Horn is organized around experts teaching high adventure skills and resources.
